The "Ajuntament Vell" exposition hall stands near the site occupied by the historic gateway to the ancient walled city, popularly known as "El Portalet". It was a defensive corner door that enclosed the present church plaza as a citadel and was the final bastion in the event of an enemy assault on the external wall. Demolished in 1923 because it threatened to collapse, the current building was constructed, which served as the City Hall and judicial offices between 1926 and 1974.

It used to contain a small chapel, in which citizens would light a candle when a neighbor was sick in order to pray for their recovery. The basement also held the old jail.
