Officers from the Maritime Surveillance and Intervention Unit (UVIM) of the Calp Local Police carried out the first rescue of the season yesterday at Racó del Corb cove, a difficult-to-access area located between the municipalities of Calp and Altea.
A woman participating in a kayaking excursion lost consciousness, and her companions managed to bring her to the cove and call for help. Due to the characteristics of the location—a rocky cove with difficult access—the evacuation had to be carried out by sea.
Upon the arrival of the police vessel, a UVIM officer swam to the cove to assist the woman, who was conscious, although disoriented and in shock. Meanwhile, the other officer remained at the helm of the vessel, keeping it in position and coordinating the rescue and boarding maneuver. With the help of several people who were in the cove, the woman was transferred in a kayak to the police vessel to begin her evacuation.
The Fire Department helicopter was also dispatched to the scene to assist in the operation. However, given the terrain, evacuation by sea proved to be the quickest and safest option, so the woman was transported by the UVIM (Mobile Emergency Care Unit) vessel to the port of Campomanes.
During the crossing, the woman briefly lost consciousness again, so the officers kept her cool with water to prevent heatstroke. Once at the port, the officers continued to provide assistance until the arrival of medical personnel. After being stabilized by a SAMU (Advanced Life Support) unit, she was transferred by a Basic Life Support ambulance to the IMED Hospital in Benidorm.
The rapid response of the UVIM officers, the coordination with the Fire Department and medical services, as well as the cooperation of the public, were essential for the successful rescue.
